Josef Newgarden Wins Thrilling 107th Indianapolis 500
Dramatic Finish Features Three Red Flags in Final Laps
Josef Newgarden Triumphs Over Defending Champion in 48-Lead-Change Race
Indianapolis, IN – Josef Newgarden etched his name in Indianapolis 500 history on Sunday, capturing his first victory at the iconic race in a thrilling and unpredictable finish.
Despite three heart-stopping red flags in the final 16 laps, Newgarden remained composed and executed a masterful last-lap pass to claim the prestigious title. The two-time IndyCar champion surged past defending race winner Simon Pagenaud in the closing moments, igniting a roar of excitement from the crowd.
The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 was a race for the ages, featuring 48 lead changes – the fourth-most in the race's storied history. Newgarden's triumph marks the second consecutive year that a driver has won the Indy 500 from the pole position, a feat last achieved by Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2014.
The race was filled with drama and suspense from start to finish. Newgarden led the most laps (128), but several other drivers had a chance to take the victory. A late-race crash by Oliver Askew brought out the third and final red flag, setting up a one-lap shootout for the win between Newgarden and Pagenaud.
In the end, it was Newgarden's experience and poise that prevailed. The 29-year-old American driver has now cemented his place among the legends of the Indianapolis 500, joining a select group of drivers who have won the race multiple times. His victory also marked the first time that a Team Penske driver has won the Indy 500 since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.
